Livestock buildings

TODAY THE FARMER IS ALSO A MANAGER

The Polish economy is constantly developing, and agriculture is one of the important elements of its development. It is true that the number of people working in agriculture is decreasing and this is a trend that is difficult to stop. Young people often choose large urban agglomerations, which give them disproportionately greater development opportunities than rural areas. Despite this, our country does not suffer from a lack of food, and every year it increases exports, mainly to neighboring countries, both for vegetables, fruit and meat. One of the factors is the takeover of some land, animals and buildings by larger entities from farmers who have changed industries, and the other is the development and increase in the efficiency of running agricultural farms. Today, the farmer is also a manager and, thanks to the availability of, among other things, EU subsidies, he is able to maintain greater efficiency of his business.

LIVESTOCK BUILDINGS AND CONSTRUCTION REGULATIONS AND LAW.

The development combined with accession to the EU forced many people to adapt to new standards. Many restrictions apply, in particular, to livestock buildings and the animals kept there. Currently, a modern livestock building must not only comply with Polish and EU legislation, but also with the regulations of other countries where meat products are sent. In terms of regulations, there is also the aspect of zootechnical conditions for each category of animals.

In construction law, a livestock building is described as a second-class building. This concerns buildings used in the economy for production, economic and inventory and storage purposes. The purpose of such a building is animal breeding. What animals can be bred in this type of facilities? Truly different, here is a short list:

  • Chickens - rearing houses, hen houses and broiler houses are planned for breeding chickens.
  • Sheep - sheepfolds
  • Barns - cattle
  • Piggeries - pigs

The list is longer, but the above-mentioned objects constitute the majority of livestock buildings in Poland. More detailed data can be found in section three, chapter eleven of the REGULATION OF THE MINISTER OF INFRASTRUCTURE of April 12, 2002 on the technical conditions to be met by buildings and their location.

Chapter 11. Special requirements for livestock premises.

§ 109 [Safety requirement] A room intended for livestock should meet the needs resulting from the principles of rational keeping of animals and appropriate working conditions of the staff, and should also meet the requirements regarding fire safety of livestock buildings and animal evacuation, specified in Chapter VI, Chapter 9.
§ 110 [Organization] In the room intended for livestock, the following should be provided:
1) daylight or artificial lighting, adapted to the species and group of animals,
2) air exchange required for a specific species and group of animals,
3) maintaining the right temperature,
4) protection against weather conditions and moisture from the ground and remaining animal excrements,
5) discharging sewage from animal stalls to external or internal tight tanks,
6) equipment with electrical installations and devices, adapted to the purpose of the rooms, and appropriate working conditions for the staff.
§ 111 (repealed)
§ 112 [Electrical installations and devices] It is permissible not to equip a room intended for livestock, used periodically, with electrical installations and devices.

FEATURES OF A GOOD LIVESTOCK BUILDING

The absolute basis is to create a safe and ergonomic space for animals and staff. A well-designed livestock building should last for years, even in the most demanding weather conditions. The durability of the structure is one of the elements that have a huge impact on overall safety. Another aspect that should be important when deciding on construction is the possibility of adapting the building for purposes other than those originally intended. Flexibility and ease of changing the target purpose is undoubtedly an aspect that many farmers will appreciate.

TENT HALLS FOR LIVESTOCK

The above features perfectly match tent halls. This type of construction is increasingly used by farmers. They are perfect as halls for agricultural machinery or crops. Another popular application is the livestock buildings discussed above. Thanks to the use of modern technologies, tent halls are completely safe facilities, in this respect they are as good as traditional brick buildings. Additionally, they have a number of advantages that make it worth considering building a livestock building based on steel structures.

The basic one, as in many cases, is the price, which is often 30% lower than in the case of traditional construction methods. For many farmers, implementation time is of great importance and in this field, tent halls are unrivaled. It depends on the complexity of the project, but in general it is a shorter period than construction with bricks or hollow bricks. For some farm owners, the added value is the ability to quickly dismantle the hall and assemble it in another location.
